Unity in DiverCity© Universal Festivals for Humanity
Unity in DiverCity is a community action project based in Muncie, Indiana. The mission of Unity in DiverCity is to foster both contact and dialogue among different cultures by organizing citywide festivals that celebrate the cultural diversity of American cities, for the purpose of promoting unity and diversity in those communities. We take a broad view of diversity, seeing culture as including not only race and ethnicity, but also nationality, language, gender, (dis)ability, sexuality, religion, social class, and region.
Unity in DiverCity is a project being organized by The DiverCity Group, a local grassroots community organization that has been meeting monthly since February of 2004 to celebrate diversity and plan the next festival. The DiverCity Group began as a Study Circle on Race, but has expanded. Our first annual festival, “Unity in DiverCity 2005: Roots and Heritage,” featured more than 350 local performers, vendors, artists, community organizations, and cultural groups, and more than 1000 people attended. We are currently working on planning our next festival, “Unity in DiverCity 2006: The Many Faces of Culture,” as well as writing a handbook to place on this website – a how-to manual to teach others across the nation how they can put on their own city-wide diversity festivals where they live.
